Business Terms Explained

Solopreneur Business Glossary

Plain-English definitions of the business terms every solopreneur needs to know β€” from finance and legal to marketing and technology.

A – C

Money owed to your business by clients who have received goods or services but haven't paid yet. High AR means cash flow problems β€” actively manage collection to stay liquid.
The true annual cost of borrowing money, including interest and fees. Always compare APR (not just interest rate) when evaluating loan or credit card offers. A 20% interest rate with high fees may have an APR of 35%+.
A financial statement showing your assets (what you own), liabilities (what you owe), and equity (net worth) at a single point in time. The fundamental equation: Assets = Liabilities + Equity.
A numerical measure of your business's creditworthiness tracked by bureaus like Dun & Bradstreet (0–100 PAYDEX), Equifax Business, and Experian Business. Higher scores unlock better credit products, lower rates, and higher limits.
The movement of money in and out of your business. Positive cash flow = more coming in than going out. Negative cash flow can sink even profitable businesses. 82% of small business failures are cash flow-related.
Total sales and marketing spend divided by the number of new customers acquired in a period. A sustainable business needs CAC to be significantly lower than Customer Lifetime Value (LTV). Target: LTV is at least 3x CAC.

D – L

A unique 9-digit identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet to every business. Required to start your D&B credit file and often required for federal contracts and some business accounts. Get yours free at dnb.com.
A unique 9-digit number assigned by the IRS to identify your business for tax purposes. Like a Social Security Number for your business. Required to open business bank accounts and build business credit. Apply free at IRS.gov.
Revenue minus cost of goods sold (COGS), divided by revenue, expressed as a percentage. Service businesses typically have 60–80%+ gross margins. Product businesses typically have 30–60%+ gross margins depending on the industry.
Selling outstanding invoices to a third-party company (a "factor") at a discount (usually 80–95% of face value) in exchange for immediate cash. Useful for B2B businesses with long payment cycles needing to accelerate cash flow.
A business structure that combines the liability protection of a corporation with the tax simplicity of a sole proprietorship. Separates your personal and business finances legally. The most common business entity for solopreneurs. Cost: $50–$500 to form depending on state.

M – S

Predictable revenue generated each month from subscriptions, retainers, and recurring contracts. MRR is more valuable than project revenue because it's predictable and compounding. Building MRR is the key to financial stability as a solopreneur.
Payment terms where the full invoice amount is due within 30 or 60 days of the invoice date. Vendor accounts with Net 30 terms that report to business credit bureaus are the foundation of building business credit (Tier 1 vendor accounts).
A legal agreement making you personally responsible for a business debt if the business can't repay it. Lenders can pursue your personal assets. Building business credit lets you eventually access products with "no personal guarantee" β€” protecting your personal wealth.
A small business loan partially guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Because the government backs part of the risk, banks can offer lower rates and longer terms than conventional loans. The most common type is the SBA 7(a) loan for up to $5 million.
A tax election (not a business structure) that allows LLC or corporation profits to pass through to owners without self-employment tax. Profitable solopreneurs earning $80K+ net can save $10,000–$30,000+ annually by electing S-Corp status. Consult a CPA first.
The practice of optimizing your website and content to rank higher in search engine results (primarily Google). Good SEO drives free, organic traffic from people actively searching for what you offer. It compounds over time and is the highest-ROI long-term marketing channel for most solopreneurs.

T – Z

Any credit account β€” vendor account, credit card, or loan β€” that appears on your business credit report. Each tradeline contributes to your business credit score. You need at least 3 tradelines to establish a PAYDEX score with Dun & Bradstreet.
A fractional Chief Financial Officer who provides strategic financial guidance on a part-time basis. A vCFO builds financial models, analyzes KPIs, guides funding strategy, and provides the financial oversight of a full-time CFO at 10–15% of the cost. Typically engaged for $1,500–$8,000/month.
Current assets (cash, receivables, inventory) minus current liabilities (bills due within 12 months). Positive working capital means you have enough short-term assets to cover short-term obligations. Negative working capital is a serious warning sign requiring immediate attention.
